Welcome to the Fellowship of Christian Home Educated Students (FOCHES…sounds like ‘focus’) serving the area of Brookings, SD.
Several of us moms have put our heads together to create a type of college/tech school/trade school prep day for our high school aged young adults. As we have met to piece together what we want this to look like, we decided this is too big, too helpful, and too useful not to share with as many home school communities as we can.
We would like to formally invite any of your home school area families who have high school aged (9th-12th grade) students to join us for this free event. All we need is an RSVP so we can plan adequately for seating, as well as have a number to tell all the colleges we are inviting so they know how much of their materials to bring.
There will be a downloadable packet of reference materials emailed prior to the event. Instead of making copies, we are asking families to simply print out their packet and bring it along with them to the event. Here are the details:
WHAT: Home School College Fair and and prep event. This includes info on creating transcripts, CLEP and Dual Credits, PSAT/ACT/SAT testing, job shadowing and internships, how to create a resume, cover letters and scholarship essays, college applications, scholarships, grants, and several colleges we anticipate will participate in an on-site Q & A and personal visits.
WHEN: Thursday, October 19, 2017. The day will begin at 9:00 AM with a break for lunch (feel free to bring a sack lunch, or take advantage of some of the Brookings area restaurants). College “on-site visits” will be available after lunch, as well as follow-up, one-on-one assistance with any of the items from the morning’s workshops. We anticipate the day will be done no later than 4:00 PM.
WHO: Any 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students and their parents. We are unable to provide childcare at this time.
WHERE: We will meet and hold all activities at GracePoint Wesleyan Church which is located at 1420 Orchard Dr.; Brookings, SD 57006.
COST: FREE. Coffee and cookies will be available. Please bring a sack lunch, or enjoy one of the restaurants in the area. Information about that will be included in the packet. Packets will be emailed out for each family to print and bring along. This is also how we will keep it free. 🙂 A list of colleges coming to participate will be available shortly.
RSVP: Please respond not later than Thursday, September 14, 2017, with how many will be attending. I realize this is rather quick, so I thank you for your help with that. It will help immensely with planning.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions or clarifications needed. We’re so happy to answer any of them! You may contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are RSVPing, please include the following information:
